James and Maria Rodriguez are a married couple in Austin, Texas. They started Casa Verde Living as a weekend project on Etsy, selling planters. It grew into a real business. $1.1M a year on Shopify. No investors. No funding. Just the two of them.

The Problem

Finding #1

The best seller that lost money

Their ceramic planter set looked like it made $34 profit per sale in Shopify. That was technically true. But after ad costs, shipping, and returns, every single sale actually lost $7. Stopped running ads on the planter set immediately. Raised the price from $49 to $59. Moved the ad budget to 8 products that actually made money after ad spend.

Finding #2

847 customers worth 6x more than everyone else

Out of 26,000+ customers, 847 people (3.2%) were worth 6 times more than the average customer. They bought 4 times more often. They never returned anything. And 72% of them came from Google search, which was basically free. Nobody was paying attention to them because the data was split across three different tools.

Built a special email sequence just for these customers. Started a referral program for them. Shifted 15% of ad budget to find more people like them. This group alone started generating $4,200/month in new revenue within 60 days.

Finding #3

Meta Ads were lying about their results

Meta said their Instagram ads were returning $3.10 for every $1 spent. EcomBrain checked the actual Shopify sales data. The real number was $1.30. Meanwhile, Google ads were returning $6.20 for every $1 spent but only getting 22% of the budget. They were pouring 78% of their money into the platform that performed worst.

Flipped the budget. Cut Meta from 78% to 40%. Moved money to Google where every dollar worked nearly 5 times harder. Overall ad performance doubled within 8 weeks.
